1. Present Indefinite / Present Continuos.

Exercise 1.1. Put the verbs in brackets into the Present Indefinite and the Present Continuos.
1. "Why you (put) on your coat?” -I go for a walk. You (come) with me?” - Yes, I`d love to come. You (mind) if I (bring) my dog?” - "No.”
2. "I (go) to visit Peter tonight. He (leave) tomorrow morning.” - "He (come) back the same day?” - "I (not/know).”
3. "Jack (arrive) this evening.” – "You (meet) him?” – "Yes.” – "Where you (meet) him?” – "I (meet) him at the station.”
4. Ann ( not/come) today. She (be busy) reading "Naked Lunch” by W.Burroughs.
5. "Nick (leave) today. – "What train he (take) for his journey?” – "He (catch) the 5.50 train.”
6. Ann and Nick (drive) up to Moscow this afternoon.
7. "You (write) him tonight?” – "Yes, I always (write) him on his birthday. You (want) to send any message?” – "Certainly.”
8. Jack: Lunch (be) ready, Mother? I (be) hungry and I (be) in a hurry as well. I (play) football this afternoon.
Mother: Well, I (be) sorry, but lunch (not/be) ready. Anyway, look at the rain. You can’t play football in this bad
weather. That’s the worst thing to do. You (want) to catch a cold?
Jack: Oh Mother, we often (play) in much worse weather than this. And it’s an important match today. You
(not/come) to watch us?
Mother: Oh, no.

Exercise. Translate into English.
1. Каждый год он проводит каникулы в горах.
2. Мама на кухне. Она печет торт.
3. Наши дети любят играть в саду, а я люблю изучать английский и делать контрольные.
4. «Где Том?» – «Он играет в саду».
5. «Что вы сейчас читаете?» – «Я читаю «Тропик Рака» Генри Миллера».
6. Кто-то стучит в дверь. Откройте, пожалуйста.
7. «Что-то дети очень присмирели. Сходите, пожалуйста, и посмотрите, что они там делают». – «Они что-то рисуют».

9. Он обычно так быстро говорит, что я его не понимаю.

Exercise 1.3. Translate into English.
1. «Что она обычно делает по вечерам?» – «Она обычно читает или слушает радио».
2. Каким поездом вы уезжаете в Петербург на следующей неделе?
3. В следующее воскресенье к нам приезжают друзья из Глазго.
4. Аня сейчас шьет себе платье. Она всю одежду шьет себе сама.
5. На ней сегодня шляпа, потому что солнце очень жаркое.
6. Я не могу сейчас дать вам газету, потому что я ее читаю.
7. «Вы записаны в нашу библиотеку?» - «Да». «Вы много читаете?» – «Да, довольно много». «Как часто вы меняете книги?» – «Я меняю их через три-пять дней».
8. «Вы видите где-нибудь мои очки?» – «Нет, я их ищу».
9. «Что у вас обычно на завтрак?» – «Я обычно ем бутерброд и выпиваю чашку кофе».
10. «Почему вы так быстро идете сегодня?» - «Я спешу, так как я встречаюсь со своей сестрой в 4 часа».
11. В следующее воскресенье я уезжаю в Эдинбург.

2. Past Indefinite / Past Continuos.

Exercise 2.1. Put the verbs in brackets into the Past Indefinite and the Past Continuos.
1. I (open) the shutters and (look) out. The car (stand) where I had left it.
2. Suddenly I (realize) that they (not/pay attention) to me any longer. They (mutter) something and all (look) in the same direction. I (turn) my head and (look) where they all (look). A man (come) slowly down a steep little street that (lead) uphill between the houses on my right.
3. On my left I (see) the lights of the first house of the village, and I (hurry) towards it through the wood when a sudden flash of light (make) me stop.
4. At that time I (look) for a job.
5. Miss Nobbs (not/see) him leave the office. At half past four she (make) herself a cup of tea in a small recess off the main corridor.
6. The idea first (occur) to me that afternoon as I (back) the car into the garage.
7. I probably (drop) the key when I (fish) for small change in my bag at the news-stand.
8. All through the night I (hear) them work, open drawers, drag cases over the floor. They (pack).

Exercise 2.2. Choose the Past Indefinite or the Past Continuos.
a. I met/was meeting a friend while I did/was doing the shopping.
b. I paid/was paying for my thing when I heard/was hearing someone call my name.
c. I turned/was turning round and saw/was seeing Paula.
d. She wore/was wearing a bright red coat.
e. We decided/were deciding to have a cup of coffee.
f. While we had/were having a drink, a waiter dropped/was dropping a pile of plates.
g. We all got/were getting a terrible shock.
h. While the waiter picked/was picking up the broken plates, he cut/was cutting his finger.
i. We left/were leaving the cafe and said/were saying goodbye.
j. I finished/was finishing my shopping and went/was going home.

Exercise 2.3. Use the Past Indefinite or the Past Continuos.
1. Yesterday, as I (walk) down Regent Street, I (meet) George, an old friend of mine. He (recognize) me at once, though I (wear) a scarf round my face as I (suffer) from toochache.
2. He (tell) me how sorry he (be) to see me in such a poor way, and (add), "I (come) to see you a fortnight ago, but unfortunately I couldn’t find time to get round to you.” All the time he (say) this, I (try) to remember something I (want) to tell him.
3. Eventually I (remember) and (say) to him, "Just before I (come) out, I (receive) a letter from Smith, in which he (say) that he (hope) you would call on him soon. He last (see) you at Bob`s birthday party but you (talk) so cheerfully with Tom that he )not/dare) to interrupt!”

3. Present Perfect / Past Indefinite.

Exercise 3.1. Put the verbs in brackets into the Present Perfect or the Past Indefinite.
1. I don’t know Susan’s husband. I … (never/ meet) him.
2. My grandfather died 30 years ago. I … (never/see) him.
3. The weather … (be) very nice recently, don’t you think?
4. When we were on holiday, the weather … (be) awful.
5. Bob and Alice are married. They … (be) married 20 years.
6. Molly lives in London. She … (live) there all her life.
7. Mr.Smith … (work) in a bank for 5 years. Then he gave up.

Exercise 3.2. Choose the correct form: the Present Perfect or the Past Indefinite.
1. I just … (tell) the answer.

3. John and David … (go) away 5 minutes ago.
4. I … (read) that book in the summer holiday.

Exercise 3.3. Translate into English.
1. Рада вас видеть! Я так много слышала о вас.
2. Я закончила работу. Взгляни на нее, пожалуйста.
3. Я встретилась с Томом 3 года назад у Смитов. С тех пор ничего не слышала о нем.
4. Аня, где вы были? Я давно вас здесь жду.

4. The Passive Voice.

Exercise 4.1. Say that the action was done some time ago:
Example: Send the letter, please. - It was already sent.
1. Put the books on the shelf.
2. Finish your work. Please.

Exercise 4.2. Disagree with the following statement and add some information.
Example: The door is shut. – The door isn’t shut, it’s opened.
1. The book is translated into Russian.
2. The parents are invited to dinner.
3. Ann was asked to come in time.
4.The boxes of sweets were left on the table.

Exercise 4.3. Ask if is so.
Example: The letter is sent to him. – Is the letter sent to him?
1.Bob is invited to dinner.
2.My things are left at home.
3.I was invited to the cinema last night.
4.The books were put in order.
5.We were being followed.
6.I have been invited to the party by Nick.

Exercise 4.4. Make the sentence passive:
Example: I finished the work. – The work was finished.
1.My friend wrote that book.
2.They published a lot of books last year.
3.A policeman brings us newspapers everyday.
4.They take books from the library.
Exercise 4.5. Translate into Russian.
1. He was laughed at.
2. They publish a lot of books every year.
3. It is said he is 90 years old.
4. If it could be called a letter.
5. The child was taken care of.
6. The doctor was sent for.
7. John was asked to the blackboard.
8. It’s said she’s done much for her family.
9. But nothing is known for certain.
10. A life time was spent this way.
11. And he was never seen again. No trace (след) of him was ever found.

Exercise 4.6. Express in the passive the second sentence.
1. The child is very ill. You must send for the doctor.
2. This little boy was always dirty. No one looked after him properly.
3. He never broke a promise in his life. People could always rely on him.
4. She is going to the hospital. The doctor will take good care of her.

Exercise 4.7. Put the sentences into the Passive Voice.
1. We hear a sound of a guitar in the hall.
2. She found the envelope at last behind the dining-room clock.
3. The secretary will change our time-table tomorrow.
4. Jack has just spilled the milk.
5. We have never lived in this house.
6. He said that he had thrown the newspaper away.
7. By the age of 18 he will have got a very good education.

Exercise 4.8. Use the verb in brackets in the necessary form of the Passive Voice.
1. Thousands of new houses (to build) every year.
2. My keys (to return) to me, they (to pick up) in the street tonight.
3. Dogs must ( to keep) on leads in the gardens.
4. I’m not wearing my black shoes today. They (to mend).
5. Nick, why the car (not to lock) or (to put) into the garage?

5. Sequence of Tenses.

Exercise 5.1. Observe the rules of the sequence of tenses.
1. I hope you know what you ( to do).
2. She claimed that she (to meet) Nick on her way home.
3. Susan told her that I probably (to come) to her place later.
4. Then I thought about Mother, she certainly (to ask) me where I (to be) all day.
5. I will say that we (to agree) to take care of the child.
6. An old friend rang me up to ask if they (to have) a god time, how Kate (to feel) and whether she (can) go with us to the concert.
7. She ended by saying that she (to think) she (to make) a mistake.
8. She felt that her father (not to want) to disturb her.
9. They knew that Jack (to work) very hard and (not to agree) to take a holiday at the moment.
10. I winder what she (to do) here so late at night.
11. The father knew it (to rain) as it was wet.
12. I thought that we (to discuss) the problem when the manager (to return) from Moscow.

Exercise 5.2. Translate into English observing the rules of the sequence of tenses.
1. Он показал мне где работает его сестра.
2. Они знали, что я говорю по-английски.
3. Врач сказал, что я должен остаться дома.
4. Нам сказали, что наш учитель заболел.
5. Неужели вы не знали, что я закончил работу?

Exercise 5.3. Translate into English observing the rules of the sequence of tenses.
1. Экскурсовод сказал, что поезд только что пришел, и мы поедем на экскурсию через час.
2. Мы много занимались и, надеюсь, что весной хорошо сдадим экзамены.
3. Мне обещали достать словари, как только я начну работать над статьёй.
4. Он соощил, что они обсудят этот вопрос, как только менеджер вернется в офис.
5. Мы решили, что вы свободны и сможете это сделать.
6. Мы договорились, что купим у них эти товары, если они снизят цену.
